YEAR 2H AUTUMN 2013

Week 1 - Friday 11th November

This week we have worked in groups of five to complete 5 activities:

Activity 1: I am learning to understand why it is important to create and look after different kinds of habitats.

We chose an animal and made it a suitable habitat.

Activity 2: I am learning how to stay safe at Forest School.

Mrs Simpson showed the contents of the Forest School Rucksack and how to use all the equipment correctly and safely.

Activity 3: I am learning how to use tools safely.

I am learning how to apply a force. (push and pull)

Mrs Gillott and Neville showed us how to use a bow saw correctly. We used it to chop wooden disks.

Activity 4 and 5: I am learning to use a range of materials to make a picture and an object. I am learning to use first hand experiences to create a piece of art.

We made a Bonfire Night picture using natural and art materials. Each group added to the picture. We worked with Barry to make musical instruments to accompany our song: The Creepy Castle.

In the afternoon we all used natural materials to make people that lived and worked inside a castle. 

Week 2 - Friday 18th November

This week we have worked in groups of five to complete 5 activities:

Activity 1: I am learning to understand that both pushes and pulls are forces. I am learning how pushes and pulls make things move in our environment.

We discussed and identified forces we use every day then we became Forces Detectives and spied on the other groups to discover which forces they were using. You can see our discoveries on the previous page in our books.

Activity 2: I am learning how to draw things from first hand experiences.

We looked at all the wonderful plants and tress outside and drew one using the correct colours. Have a look in our art books to see what we drew.

Activity 3: I am learning how to try knots.

Neville and Mrs Simpson taught us how to tie a reef and clove knot. A reef knot is a good knot to use to tie a bandage as it is a flat knot.

Activity 4: I am learning to use a range of materials to make a hideout.

We worked with Barry and Michelle to make a dragon hideout. We could see out but the dragon couldn’t see us!!

Activity 5: I am learning to use a range of materials to make a piece of art. Each group is named after a dragon so we had to make a picture of our dragon using natural materials.

In the afternoon we worked in groups to make a castle using junk modelling.

Forest School Week 3 - Friday 22nd November

This week we have worked in groups of five to complete 5 activities:

Activity 1: I am learning to names parts of a plant.

I am learning that plants in the local environment are similar to others in some ways and different in others.

I am learning to make comparisons of local plants.

We worked with Mrs Revitt to identify different parts of a plant. Then we looked ta plants around school and identified any similarities and differences.

Activity 2: I am learning to plant seeds.

We worked with Barry to plant seeds and identify different types of plants. Hopefully they will all grow!!! 

Activity 3: I am learning how to make pumpkin soup.

I am learning how to cut vegetables carefully.

Chris and Mrs Simpson taught us how make pumpkin soup. We got to try it and it tasted amazing!! 

Activity 4: I am learning to use my imagination to make an object.

We worked with Michelle and Esther to make a dragon out of junk material. Look at our brilliant dragons! 

Activity 5: I am learning to use natural materials to make a dragon nest.(bowl)

I am learning to identify trees using their leaves.

Neville helped us to make dragon nests using leaves and balloons! We also learned all about the trees the leaves came from. 

Earlier in the week we received a letter saying dragons had been seen in eth area so we worked in groups to make a dragon traps. 

Forest School Week 4 - Friday 29th November

This week we have worked in groups to complete 5 activities:

Activity 1: I am learning to identify mini beasts and their habitats. 

We worked with Mrs Harris to identify mini beasts that live in our garden. We used books to help us and find interesting facts about their habitats. Then we went and looked in these habitats to see what we could find. After that we made Top Trump mini beast cards!

Activity 2: I am learning to use forces. I am learning to use wood to make a bow and arrow.

We worked with Barry to make a bow and arrow. We talked about the forces we used to make the bow and to fire the arrow.

Activity 3: I am learning to use tools correctly. I can identify the forces I am using.

Mrs Simpson taught us how to whittle wood using eth correct tools. We talked about the forces we used to do this and what happened when we used less or more force. We got to try it and it tasted amazing!!

Activity 4: I am learning to use natural materials to make a giant.

We worked with Michelle to make a giant out of natural materials. Look at our scary giant!!

Activity 5: I am learning to use natural materials to make a dragon nest (bowl). I am learning to identify trees using their leaves.

Neville and Neil continued to help us to make dragon nests using leaves and balloons! We also learned all about the trees the leaves came from.

Earlier in the week we received another letter saying giant dragon eggs eaters had been seen in the garden so we improved our traps from last week to make sure they caught the giants!

Forest School Week 5 - Friday 6th December

This week we have worked in groups to complete 5 activities:

Activity 1: I am learning how a solid becomes a liquid. I am learning to use the correct tools. I am learning to identify the forces I am using.

We worked with Mrs Shaw and Mrs Gillott to make soup. It is important to use the correct tools. We identified the forces we were using to cut the vegetables. We learned how solids turn into liquids when heated. A reversible change can be changed back and an irreversible change cannot. We got to try it and it tasted amazing!!

Activity 2: I am learning to use natural materials to make a character from the nativity.

We used natural materials from the garden to make characters from the Nativity story.

Activity 3: I am learning to use natural materials to make a 3D structure.

Michelle helped us to make Christmas decorations using willow and twigs from the garden. They will look lovely on our Christmas trees.

Activity 4: I am learning to make a bird feeder using natural materials.

Barry and Neville helped us to make bird feeders using pine cones. We learned all about the different birds in our garden as well.

Activity 5: I am learning to use a digital camera. I am learning to download images to the computer.

We took photographs in the garden then we downloaded them onto the computer so we could edit them and try to decide on a final 12 pictures for calendar.

In the afternoon we spent time tidying the garden and looking after our environment.

Forest School Week 6 - Friday 13th December

This week we have worked in groups to complete different activities:

Activity 1: (at the farm) I am learning to identify habitats and discuss how they are different in the garden and at the farm.

Neville and Mrs Harris took us to see a badger set at the farm. We learned why badgers build sets on a hill and what they like to eat. Did you know badgers like to dig toilets outside their sets? We compared this habitat to the one in the garden.

Activity 2: I am learning to use knots.

We worked with Mrs Gillott and Neville to make spiders webs using sticks and string. We are getting very good at tying strong knots!

Activity 3: I am learning to use natural materials to make a 3D structure.

Michelle and Fiona helped us to make Christmas decorations using willow and twigs from the garden. They will look lovely on our Christmas trees.

Activity 4: I am learning to make a habitat for mini beasts.

Barry and Neil helped us to make a bug hotel. We had to decide which would be the best place to put it and why.

In the afternoon we went to the farm, where we made bows and arrows as well as dens and hideouts to watch for dragons.

We have enjoyed our Forest School learning this year.
