Our new teacher Mrs Lockhart will be experiencing an exciting opportunity in October 2013. Mrs Lockhart has told the children all about this in an assembly and this is what she told them.
I am very excited to have the opportunity to visit Kenya during October. I will be flying to the capital Nairobi and then onto Kisumu. From there I will make my way to a small town called Kimilili, located in Western Kenya. I am very fortunate to have a very close friend from Manchester who has lived in Kimilili for the past four years and organises the GAP programmes for the organisation IcFEM. I will be able to stay with her and meet lots of different people and hopefully get a real feel for Kenyan life.
During my time in Kimilili, my main focus will be to go into the local Primary School where I will be working on a project to turn a bland, unused classroom in to a bright and vibrant Art Room. The school has very limited resources and lack inspiration for ways in which they can introduce creativity into the school. I will be taking with me lots of art resources and teacher resource packs to share ideas with the teachers there. I am hoping to teach some art lessons at the school and am very excited about meeting the children and discovering all about life in Kenya. I would also like to take some cards and letters from the children at school to share with the children there. I will be taking lots of photos to share with the children in a whole school assembly on my return”.
We will be using this experience as an opportunity to link with a school abroad. The year two children will be writing letters to the children and we will be sending some photographs of our school. Mrs Lockhart will be photographing her visit and will share this with the children after half term.
In addition to this we would like to raise money for Mrs Lockhart to buy some resources for the Art room by having a cake sale, after school, on Tuesday 8th October. We would love you to support us in this by:
a) Sending buns or biscuits to school on the 8th for us to sell
b) Buying buns after school!
I am sure you will agree this is a fantastic learning opportunity for all the children and I hope you are able to support us.
A HUGE THANK YOU
We would like to say thank you SO much for the wonderful support everyone gave to our cake sale to raise money for the Kenyan schools’ Art room. Your efforts raised £242.12!
