Summer 2016

We have also been learning our new oral story ‘How the tortoise got his shell.’ We learned the story by heart and made our own story map to help us to retell it. We have innovated the story and changed some of the characters. We can’t wait to get writing our own stories.

We have been learning to add and subtract 10 or 11 from 2-digit numbers using a 100 square and a number line. We are great at counting in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s can use this to solve practical problems involving repeated addition (multiplication).

We can visualise and name common 3D shapes, describe their features and use them to make patterns and models. We are good at spotting 3D shapes in our environment.

We have used play dough to find halves and quarters of different kinds of shapes and also amounts.

We have been working with money and learning how to find totals to 20p and 50.

This term we have been learning about the rainforest. We have been using the computers to help us to research the animals that live in the rainforest. We discovered that there are many different types of animals! We used our fab computing skills to make our own sorting games on purple mash. Can you log on and play one?

We looked at where each animal lives and learned about the forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent layers. We worked in teams to create our own 3D model of the layers. Come and look in the year 1 classrooms to see them.

We found out facts about the animals and learned how make a fact file to share the information. We imported photographs into our documents and thought carefully about the size and style of the font in our fact files.

In science we have explored different types of animals. We learned all about mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds and how to tell which is which.

During Arts Week we will have been learning all about the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We have discussed his style of art and then created our own work in his style. We have used a printing technique to create rainforest backgrounds and mixed media to create rainforest animals.

In Design Technology we have been investigating different vehicles, looking closely at axles and wheels. We have designed and made some super jeeps to explore the Rainforest!

We had a special visitor who has taught us some Indian dances! We tried so hard as it was really tricky to sequence the movements carefully. We have also been exploring the movement of farm, jungle and arctic animals through dance.
