Today the Y2 classes got to experience what it would have been like to be a pupil at Stannington Infant School during the Victorian era over 100 years ago.

Miss Sharp was the Victorian teacher that greeted us. The classroom was transformed into a Victorian classroom and the children all dressed up as Victorian children. The children soon realised that Victorian teachers were very strict and that Victorian children should be ‘seen and not heard’! All the children had Victorian names and some had special roles to play as we stepped back in time. The children learned how Victorian children paid for their school lessons, that girls and boys were treated very differently and children who made mistakes with their learning would be made to wear the Dunces hat!

The children all took part in a reading, writing and arithmetic lesson, then the girls got to take part in a needlework lesson while the boys practised their handwriting. The children got to experience a Victorian playtime and played with whip and tops, skittles, hoops and sticks, marbles and spinning tops . The children all really enjoyed the experience and loved getting into character. They found school life in the Victorian era very different to school life now!
