The Year 1 children had a brilliant time in a planetarium today!

We learnt lots of new facts:

  • Solar means sun.
  • There are dwarf planets. These are Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris.
  • There are 294 moons in our solar system.
  • Mercury has zero moons. It is hot in the day and cold at night.
  • Venus has zero moons and is always hot. It is 462 degrees and it has carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
  • Earth has one moon.
  • Mars has got two moons.
  • Jupiter has 294 moons and it is the biggest planet.
  • Jupiter has a Great Red Spot.
  • 1023 earths would fit into Jupiter.
  • Saturn has 146 moons and the rings are made from ice and dust.
  • Uranus has 27 moons and it has the coldest temperature.
  • Neptune has 14 moons.
  • The sun is a star.
  • There are 400 billion stars in the galaxy.
  • Lunar is the name of our moon.
  • Pluto is a dwarf planet.

We came up with some great questions too:

  • Why is Pluto a dwarf planet?
  • How was the sun made?
  • How did Saturn’s moon break into pieces?
  • Why are Neptune and Uranus sisters?
  • Why does only earth have people on?
  • How was the milky way formed?
  • What is a black hole?
  • Has anyone landed on the moon?
  • How far away is the sun?
